OPC UA & MQTT

Structured industrial communication from machines and controllers to software, data platforms and connected systems.

GPLG integrates OPC UA and MQTT into industrial architectures where reliable information exchange, interoperability and clear system boundaries are required. The protocol is selected according to the communication model, equipment and operational objective—not simply because it is available.

INDUSTRIAL CONNECTIVITY

Choose the communication model around the application

OPC UA and MQTT solve different communication requirements and can also complement one another within the same architecture.

OPC UA is particularly useful for structured industrial information and direct system interoperability. MQTT provides lightweight publish/subscribe distribution through a broker, making it effective when information must reach multiple consumers.

Protocol selection begins with the required information flow, not with a preferred technology.

TWO COMMUNICATION MODELS

Structured access and distributed messaging

01

OPC UA

Structured client/server or publish/subscribe industrial information exchange with rich data modelling.

02

MQTT

Lightweight broker-based publish/subscribe messaging for distributing selected information.

03

Gateways

Bridge equipment and systems when protocols or interfaces differ across the installation.

04

Applications

Deliver industrial information to SCADA, databases, dashboards, analytics and software.

FROM DATA FOUNDATION TO CONNECTIVITY BRIDGE

OPC UA and MQTT can work together across an industrial data architecture

Structured machine information can be acquired and contextualised close to the industrial source, then distributed to the systems that need it through an appropriate communication layer.

COMMUNICATION ARCHITECTURE

Keep control, connectivity and applications as clear responsibilities

A maintainable architecture defines where information originates, how it is represented, which system owns it and how consumers receive it.

OPC UA

Industrial interoperability with structured information

OPC UA can expose machine and process information through a standard interface while preserving data types, hierarchy, status and other context useful to industrial applications.

GPLG can configure or integrate OPC UA servers and clients around PLCs, SCADA systems, gateways and custom software where the equipment supports the required functionality.

OPC UA ENGINEERING

More than simply connecting to an endpoint

Namespace structure

Organise exposed information so consumers can understand and maintain the interface.

Data quality

Preserve status, timestamps and relevant context around values where available.

Access control

Configure users, certificates and permissions according to the capabilities of the installation.

Client integration

Connect supervisory and software applications to the approved OPC UA information model.

INDUSTRIAL COMMUNICATION IN PRACTICE

One engineering environment, multiple communication responsibilities

OPC UA can provide structured access to industrial information while MQTT can distribute selected data to decoupled applications through a broker.

MQTT

Publish once and distribute information to the systems that need it

MQTT separates publishers from subscribers through a broker. Sources publish messages to defined topics and authorised consumers subscribe to the information relevant to them.

This model can reduce direct point-to-point dependencies and is useful for IIoT, distributed applications and data services when engineered with a coherent topic and payload structure.

MQTT ENGINEERING

Design the message structure as carefully as the connection

Topic hierarchy

Define a predictable namespace around site, line, machine, function or other useful context.

Payload design

Specify what each message contains, including identifiers, values, timestamps and quality where required.

Quality of Service

Select delivery behaviour according to the importance and characteristics of each information flow.

Broker architecture

Define clients, authentication, permissions and broker responsibilities around the deployment.

OPC UA + MQTT

Combine structured industrial data with scalable distribution

In some architectures, OPC UA provides structured access close to the industrial equipment while MQTT distributes selected information to other systems.

A gateway or application can map approved OPC UA data into a defined MQTT topic and payload model. The exact design depends on equipment capabilities, network topology and the consumers of the information.

FROM REQUIREMENT TO COMMISSIONING

A structured communication engineering process

01

Requirements

Identify sources, consumers, update needs and the information that must cross system boundaries.

02

Protocol architecture

Select OPC UA, MQTT or a combined approach according to the actual communication model.

03

Information model

Define tags, namespaces, topics, payloads and contextual information.

04

Configuration

Implement servers, clients, brokers, gateways and required application interfaces.

05

Testing

Validate values, timestamps, status, message behaviour, reconnect scenarios and permissions.

06

Support & expansion

Extend the architecture coherently as machines and applications are added.
